There’s something deeply special about the greyhounds who come into our care. Not the ones with the smooth coats, polished manners, or perfect assessments. The ones who come with histories that have left them scarred, a little rough around the edges, or simply in need of a little more time. These are the dogs we fight for—the ones that don’t immediately shine or get adopted on the first try, but who, with the right support, turn into the most loving companions you could ever ask for.
Take Winter’s story, for example. She came from a rural pound, found wandering the streets of Taree, a mix breed without a microchip to identify her. Her life before this point was a mystery, but what we did know was that she was full of energy, unsettled, and, quite frankly, a little bit wild. She couldn’t be rehomed straight away—she was just too active, too crazy for most people to handle. But here’s where the magic of patience and love comes in. Winter is a completely different dog now. After being given time, space, and proper care, she has transformed into a calm, relaxed greyhound who will make the most amazing pet. The wild energy has settled into a gentle spirit, and the dog who was once deemed unadoptable is now ready to share her life with someone who can see the beauty in her journey.
And we can't forget Penny and Jai—our amputees who have had some of the most horrific injuries you could imagine. These two dogs have experienced pain and suffering that most of us can’t even begin to fathom, but despite it all, they are living their best lives now. Penny, lost her front leg due to a traumatic injury, and Jai, who suffered a similar fate. They have both shown us what true resilience is, and today, they are thriving. Penny and Jai are the definition of courage, and their stories are a testament to the healing power of love and care. They are both living proof that even after the darkest of times, there is light—and that light is a joyful, happy life with people who adore them.
Then there’s Roman, a dog with a story that breaks your heart and lifts your spirit at the same time. Roman is a tough little guy who’s had a rough start. He has plates and pins in his back hock from injuries sustained in his earlier life. His name comes from the shape of his nose, a reminder that even the smallest details can make a dog unforgettable. He is next on our list, and we know he’s going to be a beautiful boy. It’s going to take time, patience, and dedication to help him heal both physically and emotionally, but we believe in him. We know that, with the right care, he’ll emerge as the loyal, loving companion we all know he can be.
These are the dogs we fight for—the ones who don’t pass their assessments because they’re too scared or still fresh off the racetrack, the ones who need time to adjust to life outside the kennel, and the ones who have suffered physical and emotional trauma. These greyhounds might not be the first ones chosen, but they are the ones who need us most. And we’ll continue to fight for them, just as we did for Winter, Penny and Jai.
Greyhounds are remarkable animals. They have a heart that’s as big as their eyes, and while some of them come to us with a little extra baggage, the potential they hold is immeasurable. They may not have the perfect start, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the perfect finish. They just need someone to believe in them and give them the chance to show who they really are.
So let’s keep fighting for these beautiful souls. Let’s give them the time, the care, and the love they need. Because every greyhound, no matter how rough around the edges, deserves a happy ending.
